The American Dream...Krayzelburg was born in Odessa, Ukraine, where his swimming talent was noticed at an early age. He began a strenuous training program when he was nine years old. His family faced discrimination as Jews, and in 1989 his parents decided to immigrate to the United States and settle in Los Angeles. As a 13-year-old, Krayzelburg had to learn a new language, adapt to a different culture, attend school and work to help support his family. He proudly became a United States citizen in 1995 and emerged as America’s brightest male star at the 2000 Olympics. Graduated in 1998 from USC with the degree in Business Administration. Lenny Krayzelburg’s American swimming career began at the JCCs of Los Angeles, soon after he moved to the U.S. with his parents from Ukraine in 1989 when he was 13. He quickly found an aquatic home at the Westside Jewish Community Center, where he trained with Steve Becker, now a consultant with JCC Association on health, physical education and recreation. As a teen, Lenny competed in the JCC Maccabi Games® in Detroit, Michigan in 1990 and Baltimore, Maryland in 1992. Now Lenny is back to with the JCC’s starting a new and exciting program. Lenny Krayzelburg Swim School a year-round learn-to-swim school for children of all ages and levels is starting at two JCCs in the Los Angeles area—Westside and JCC at Millken in West Hills. Lenny, who owns the school will also supervise and train staff in the method he believes most successful for teaching children to swim and be water safe.
